Hi all,
I guess this is the place to get feedback on my ideas from a variety of people (ie. not just my family).

So I have 3 main business ideas and they are sort of related but not completely.

1. Online store with cute & funky products including Japanese inspired stuff.

My name for the store is 'moshi moshi baby' which I found out has been used previously but it is not in use anymore.

When I mentioned the name to my sister she screwed up her nose at me and said 'but your not Japanese' so of course that started to put some doubt in my mind about my idea.

2. Working on this online store got me thinking that there are other mums out there who have websites & online stores they need set up too. I thought I could also run a business providing this service. I have an IT and multimedia background and have been making websites almost half my life now.

3. I enjoy making invites for birthday parties, etc in photoshop so I thought that could be another service I could offer. I have also started making some templates of invite designs in my spare time.

So clearly you can see maybe I have too many ideas. Should I focus on just one or are they all possible? I thought the online store would be a good example of my work but then there are more start up costs involved with that one as I would need to buy stock.

Because I initially just had the online store idea I went ahead and organised a business name and domain so I have invested some money in it already.

I thought I could use the name and add 'design' to it to make a design component to my business to include the web design and photo invites. Or would it be better to run them under different names.

My other name I like is 'Happy Giraffe Design' or is that too unprofessional? Should I use my real name in the business name?

I think my message may be getting too long now so I better stop.

Thanks in advance for any advice you have Smile

I guess the advantage of focusing on one is you can put all your time, effort and money into it and make one successful rather than trying to do many things.

One thing I would consider is which of your options has the highest chance of success:

1 - This is starting to gain popularity I have seen a few stores pop up lately with the Kawaii theme. I guess one thing to consider is how much japanese stuff out there that is unique but popular?

2 - I think this could work. There are massive amounts of people doing craft start up business thing and they are looking for really affordable website options to move into their own (I get quite a few emails about it). There biggest thing is inexpensive, ie really really cheap :0 - which could devalue your skills. I know they seem to look at premade sites with shopping carts, and most I think are US based. So maybe to have more Aussie sites specifically aimed at the WAHM who cant afford much. That is if that idea would work with the need to being so inexpensive, as I guess that would be devaluing your skills?

3 - Personally I think this may be oversatured and so harder to succeed in. There are so many DIY options out there as well that you would have to compete with?

Also I like the name Moshi Moshi more than Happy Giraffe? Though thinking long term is Moshi Moshi Baby going to be suitable for everyting? Moshi Moshi might be a better option as then it allows you to be whatever you want?

I tend to agree with Gemma.

1. could be good but how long for, is it just a fad or will it last?

2. Definitelythe one I would concentrate on as the need will always be there and if your skills, prices and service are right you really can't go wrong.

3. I wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole nowadays as you can even buy templates off ebay, with lots of other DIY options out there. It's been done to death and the marketing battle would be huge.

Having said all that you need to go with what is your passion.

Pick 1 and focus upon that.

I have learnt first hand that following every idea that pops into your head is the worst move possible.

Pick one you are excited about and think you could go the distance with.

Most businesses fail early because they didn't just keep on going regardless of the outlook.

Businesses that pass the 3-4 year mark are generally the ones that are very successful.

1 business + focus + vision + dedication + patience = success

Thanks for the advice Smile

I think that picking one idea is the way to go and the 2nd idea is probably the one with the most potential.

I still get excited about the online store idea but then I get to make them for other people with the other idea so maybe I will be happy with that.
