Cloth can save you money

When you have your first baby it can be a costly exercise. Cots, prams, clothes, nappies - the list seems never-ending.

One of the best ways to save money is by purchasing cloth nappies. Many parents still buy disposable nappies for their supposed convenience yet we know that in the long run this is an incredibly expensive decision.

Disposable nappies cost us in monetary terms as well as in environmental damage. It can take hundreds of years for a disposable nappy to break down and in the process the faecal matter and chemicals from which it is made leak into the earth. The cost to the environment is huge.

From a domestic point of view cloth nappies work out to be far more economical and better for the environment.

On average your baby will be in nappies for 3 years. That is a lot of disposables to go through! As an estimate and calculated using the price of nappies bought in bulk, the cost of disposable nappies will be well over $3500 for the child’s entire time in nappies.
Think, too, that your eldest child may still be in nappies by the time baby numbers 2 and 3 come along. Now add up the cost of disposables for that time period. Apart from the cost just think how full your rubbish bin will be. Ah, there is another cost. Your council rates are increasing as the need for more waste resources increases.

An averaged priced full time pack of cloth nappies of premium quality, not just pre-folds, will cost you around $850 and you are done. Not only can they be reused by your baby they can be used on subsequent children, making another saving of $3500 for each child.

Some people argue that the long term cost of water and washing powders make cloth nappies expensive and contribute to damaging the environment. Washed correctly, using cold water and with bio-degradable cleaners, there is little impact on the environment, and certainly far less that the chemical impact caused by disposables.

The best thing about using cloth nappies is that you are able to manage your costs a little more. You choose which fibre your nappy will be made of and you only have to launder them every second day. With a disposable nappy once it is used it is gone and off you go on your mad dash to the supermarket in search of replacements. When managing your household budget I prefer to know that I don’t have to budget for regular purchases of nappies. Once cloth nappies are purchased they are yours to keep.

Invest in cloth nappies and save yourself some money.
